Who I am
Jonathan Growcott is a conservation technologist and large carnivore biologist. He is a PhD student at the University of Exeter, UK and an external student at the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU), University of Oxford.
He has published in world-leading, peer-reviewed scientific journals and is a regular communicator of science through radio and press. He has acted as a consultant to National Geographic Kids magazine and the BBC Natural History Unit.
Research
Technology has huge potential to transform how we study and conserve wildlife. I use new and emerging tech to conduct cutting-edge research for large carnivore monitoring. Currently, my research focuses mostly on lions and leopards.
Science is most effective when it can be easily communicated. Therefore, my research questions are heavily influenced by what I believe has the potential to connect with as many people as possible.
Different tech produces different types of data. We can use automated cameras (bottom left) to photograph different lions. We can use autonomous microphones (top middle) to record lion roars. We can also collar animals to capture fine-scale location data.
